Fiddler crab

Fiddler crab(X. formosensis)

Crustacea | Ocypodidae
Xeruca formosensis

Characteristics

The carapace of the Formosan fiddler crab is black and has a white horizontal band on the posterolateral margin. The male’s scissor-shaped chela is white and has smooth edges. The Formosan fiddler crab is an endemic species in Taiwan and prefers to inhabit flat, muddy, intertidal beaches. However, due to the growing proximity of areas of human activity, Formosan fiddler crab habitats are often exploited and damaged, resulting in the gradual decrease of their populations.

Distribution

The Formosan fiddler crab can be seen on the bank of the Gaomei II Levee at Gaomei Wetlands.
